Dear Hot Scripts Members
My wife and I have just returned from holidays in London.
Prior to leaving for our holidays, we had different priorities
-- while she was taking the headache out of holiday packing, I
had to back up and synchronize all my files with my laptop. For
some people, including myself, this backup and sync mantra
brings on feelings of optimism mixed with fear. What if
something happens to your laptop during your travels? So instead
of relying on just the laptop, I decided to move all my data
online.
I migrated my emails from MS Outlook to
Gmail, consolidated my POP3
accounts, and set up IMAP access for my email clients. Then I
uploaded my documents and other files to
Box.net, which provides support
for online document creating and editing. Instead of using
desktop software, I went for the increasingly groovy trend on
the Web -- Software as a Service, or SaaS. I can now IM from any
computer using Meebo
services, manage my to-do list with
Remember the Milk,
and even do basic image manipulation using the online version of
Photoshop Express. SaaS offers flexibility and integration
possibilities while being cheaper than desktop software. As the
SaaS industry continues to mature, we will see an expanding
range of SaaS solutions that are more secure and scalable.
