Sending an email, conventionally, using a smtp server has certain safe guards to ensure that the message you sent will get the best chance of being received at its destination. A smtp server stores the message you want to send temporarily until it passes its expirey date, delivered successfully or all delivery attempts have failed. I am no smtp expert but this is little that I know about those kinds of servers. Your script lacks nothing because it did what it was created to do, so I think maybe some other developers might make a few additions/suggestion on how to make this script become nore like a real server and all the conveniences they have.
SMTP Mailer for PHP works o linux and windows without a problem. Get's plain text mails safely into inbox but HTML mails are sometimes regarded as spam. Reporting could improve, not just success or failure, but to which addresses it was sent and to which failed
