I rate Bitrix intranet portal much higher than just a simple enterprise portal software. Its functionality goes beyond the traditional internal communications and I believe is more similar to Enterprise content management systems. It has great document workflow management, business processes automation, extranet capability, media content management, built-in XMPP server and much more. Despite ECM sounds a bit pompous and usually makes me think about the product price and maintenance, which is not the case with Bitrix. They still keep affordable pricing and easy navigation and administration that require no in-depth knowledge. In my company we don't keep a system administrator and me as a marketing manager do all the maintenance stuff myself with no hassle. At least now I can do all the changes in a minute without waiting for sysadmin to come and practice his IT witchcraft :)

Should you been looking for an intranet solution that combines stability of commercial software and transparence of FOSS - you got to have a look at Bitrix products. They are packed with rich functionality and attained an extremely easy installation and management. What I liked it the best is their approach to the source code availability. Being commercial solution by the nature, Bitrix provides source code and easy API for third-party applications! Well, I recommend at least to try it out and see for yourself when evaluating different intranet solutions.
