I tried using this but it generates a bunch of garbled text and nothing more, plus it leaves behind a rss directory that I'm not able to delete for some reason.

The "garbled text" is RSS code. A feed reader or RSS to HTML converter like CaRP is required to display it. The reason you can't delete the rsscache directory is that it is not empty--it has cache files in it that are "owned" by your webserver. You just need to run a script to delete those, and you'll be able to delete the directory.
