Originally it was written just to list files and let you download them. Now a very complete, well-featured piece of software that allows logins, group permissions, file permissions (both system-level and software-level). Admins have complete control over what each user (or group of users) have access to. File editing is supported, so it could be used to manage a website if needed. A great deal of information is available about the files and and directories. The properties window can give resolution information about photos, artist/album information about audio files, detailed information about videos, and much, much more. Installation is quite easy. There may be some CHMODing that needs to be done, but other than that, the setup script takes care of all the heavy lifting including setting up settings files and generating the needed MySQL tables.
