I recently installed this MySQL software and at first glance it really impressed me. It is basically a Windows (or Mac OS X) version of phpMyAdmin. Personally, I think phpMyAdmin is great. But, if you are in and out of the database all day long, Navicat is going to make you that much more efficient. I am used to working on Microsoft SQL Server all day, and I can see some similarities between this product and Microsoft's Enterprise Manager. With this product, you have a graphical view of all your database, tables and users. Speaking of users, the user management portion of this script is wonderful! As for SQL functionality, all the pieces are there that you would expect. Adding and deleting tables, creating new databases and running queries. One very nice feature about this product is the ability to do a database backup. With this software you can specify a source and destination server to move data. This alone is worth the price on this tool. One problem I found with this application is in it's color coding of code. The functionality works great, but in order for it to work you have to go in and type all the keywords you want highlighted and choose the color to highlight them with. They should include a default color coding scheme. Another wierd thing I found was that they have a "Design Query" option. I figured this would be a graphical method to design a query. But, upon clicking the button, nothing happens! What this button really is is an "Edit Query" button. You must first create a query and save it, then go back to edit it with the "Design Query" button. Bad wording, but it works. All in all, I would recommend this product. It has a couple small problems, but I think the benefits outweigh the pitfalls. I think it's very useful for MySQL database administration.
