You create a list of images in the xml file. Then the gallery calculates how many thumbnails can be displayed making sure that no thumbnails ever get cropped regardless of monitor size. If your list is too small, the gallery will just repeat the images from your list to fill the wall. If your list is too large, extra images will be left out. For large lists randomize mode works well ensuring that a random set of images are displayed each time the site is visited.
